3rd August  -  Susan Gray
Seascapes - Acrylic

Picture

About the Artist
Susan is a land and seascape artist who takes her inspiration from the West Country, Cumbria and the Chilterns.

Her paintings are worked up from small sketches or studies made insitu or she paints directly on large boards on the beach or in the landscape. Often painting at high tide the wild weather and windy conditions add to the excitement of working outside and allows abstract elements to help portray movement and a sense of place.

About the Workshop
Susan will start with a brief chat about initial inspiration for a painting and how to try and capture the mood and atmosphere. While demonstrating she will guide you through her thoughts on the composition, colours and the movement which is so important in painting the sea. She aims to show you her techniques for creating waves and the energy of the ocean.  She will also show various ways that she uses a painting knife.

Her workshops always include one to one tutoring and demos and she encourages everyone to develop their own style.  She aims for these to be friendly, enjoyable occasions with lots of opportunity for questions and discussion.

Materials for the Workshop
Primed board or canvas as large as you feel able to manage (Susan will bring a board at least 60 x 40cm)
Brushes - any hog or synthetic you have. Susan uses:
a mixture of hog/bristle flat or filbert  ranging from half inch, one inch and two inches wide - the two inch being a household, bristle brush
a couple of synthetic brushes for detail (not sable)
any metal painting knives (Susan prefers a small diamond shaped one and a long thin one)
an old toothbrush
a small water spray (Boots sell them)
water holder
gel medium if you have any,
palette to mix on (a flat disposable palette is good). Susan prefers to mix on a flat, white surface which is helpful with seeing the colours and loading the long knife (the small palettes with tiny wells for paint are not really suitable)
plenty of kitchen roll or old rags
rough paper to experiment on
Acrylic paints - you can bring along ones you prefer or work to Susans preferred list:
Titanium white/ ultramarine blue/ coeruleum blue/ phthalo blue/ phthalo green/ raw sienna/ burnt sienna/ burnt umber/ naples yellow/ crimson/ cadmium yellow/ paynes grey.

Reference Material
Susan always work from her own sketches but will bring along some photos pulled from magazines for others to use if they wish or to use their own photos. If participants have their own reference material she suggests looking for movement and drama.
