OIL PAINTING WORKSHOP – LANDSCAPE with Carole Hill

This oil painting day, will give both beginners and experienced painters the opportunity to paint and learn about painting landscapes in oils. Various techniques will be involved which include mixing of colours and their application and the importance of brushmarks, the use of thick and thin paint and all the do’s and don’ts in oil painting.

Materials to bring with you:

Painting boards or canvases i.e. 10” x 12” or 12” x 16” or whatever size you wish to paint.  Bring along at least 2.

I would suggest that beginners use the smaller canvas boards)

Brushes:  A mixture of sizes of hog brushes which include a size 12 round.

A rigger of (an old sable) is useful.

Bring any old sable brushes that you have, which you will not have any further use for.

Paints:

Colours:

Ultramarine Blue, Cobalt Blue, Alizarin Crimson, Cadmium Red, Ventian Red,  Cadmium Yellow, Lemon Yellow, Titanium White, Yellow Ochre, Burnt Sienna.

(These colours are a guide only – please bring what you have, however make sure you get titanium white as it is a good mixer)

Sansodor Turps (odourless). You do not need to bring any oil unless you prefer.  If you do then bring linseed oil, or liquin or stand oil or glazing medium. A small container to hold your sansodor - small jam pots will do.

Rags or kitchen roll

Odourless brush cleaner, (please no turps or white spirit) in jar with lid.

A palette – a wooden small board, tear off palette or old canvas board will do and cover it with tin foil so that you can wrap it up at the end of the day and dispose of the paint. Cling film if you wish to cover your palette.

 I will be bringing along a picture for you to try but please feel free to bring your own picture to paint if you so wish.

Make sure you wear old clothes!! I like to stand with an easel to paint but otherwise if you prefer, you can paint on your table with it propped up.  You cannot paint flat.

Belinda Collett - Still Life Any medium.  March Workshop

Today’s workshop will be themed ‘Sill Life’

Some still life arrangements will be set up, but I would encourage members to bring along between three to five items of their own interest.  The objective of the day will be to look at your approach to still life:

[1] using the information from some of the previous workshops, including for example, colour, shadows, and abstraction;

[2] to enable you to produce a realistic view of the still life, and;

[3] using your own interpretation from the arrangement in front of you.

Any medium can be used for this workshop, and members are required to bring their own materials and equipment.  If you are using oils a low odour solvent must be used, and if you are using pastels or charcoal the fixative must be applied outside the building for health reasons.

Peter Welton - Watercolours. April Workshop

Peter Welton's watercolour workshop starts with an examination of the characteristic qualities of the materials we are using...paint and paper and progresses to an introduction to the 5 techniques of watercolour painting. Members of the group will experiment and gain confidence in the use of these techniques before moving on to their utilisation in the painting of a picture using supplied photographs to act as a stimulus.

By the end of the day members will have experienced the handling of techniques which are prominent in the work of such masters as Turner and Cotman.

Peter will be bringing an exhibition of his work which he uses for reference during the class.

Members should bring a box of watercolour paint which should be either of Artists or Students quality. No lesser quality is acceptable...and he will explain why.

Good quality watercolour paper is required and his preferred choice for a class is Waterford or Bockingford 140lb (NOT surface). Size of the sheets should be at least 14" x 10" and preferably taped to a board or part of a block pad.

At least 2 brushes are required and Winsor and Newton watercolour brushes Size 5 and 8 series 111 or 222 Cotman....or equivalent.  Oh and a pot for water.
