About The Tutor
Catherine began to experiment with watercolours towards the end of her time living and working in Asia. On her return to the UK it was evident that they are uniquely suited to capturing the atmospheric British weather and landscape. She set-up a Bath studio/gallery and now travels widely to clients and art centres explaining her enthusiasm for this mobile medium and creating watercolour portraits and landscapes back at her hillside studio.

In recent years, Catherine has become absorbed in experimenting and exploiting watercolour behaviours. She has found that cascading pigments within water encourages them to mingle and react to create delicate veils of colour and colliding effects. She calls these techniques “gravity painting” and explains them to art groups and magazines, as well as in her own intensive Bath Watercolour Workshops.

About the workshop
Learn to create loose, luminous watercolours as Catherine introduces you to her “gravity painting” techniques. Step-by-step, form your own impressionistic landscape from a source photo (supplied) using lots of water and fewer brushstrokes to create bright, merging colours.

We will start by discussing some of the ways watercolour techniques differ. Next we will look at the composition of our source photo and break it down into manageable chunks to form a rough pencil plan. Step-by-step we will build up our moorland landscape using gravity painted hues and interventions such as salt and clingfilm.

Once the main paint layer is dry, we will wash out sections of paint and “lifting-off” subtle passages to let light back in. We will revisit the tones in our painting and tighten up details with densely applied tubed paint. The session will end with a review.
